Turkey Coup Attempt (Updated)


LATEST UPDATE: Reports are coming in that the Coup has failed, and Erdogan and his government remain in control of Turkey.

754 people have been arrested in connection with the coup.

Over 42 people have been killed and 1,000 injured.

Erdogan is calling for the military to be “cleansed.”

PREVIOUS UPDATE:

The Turkish Military is attempting to take over the government, and a military coup is underway in Turkey.

Military jet flyovers and gunfire is being reported, as the government of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is under siege.

QUOTE FROM TURKISH MILITARY:

“Turkish Armed Forces have completely taken over the administration of the country to reinstate constitutional order, human rights and freedoms, the rule of law and general security that was damaged.

“All international agreements are still valid. We hope that all of our good relationships with all countries will continue.”

QUOTE FROM TURKISH GOVERNMENT SOURCE:

“This is an attack against Turkish democracy. A group within the armed forces has made an attempt to overthrow the democratically elected government outside the chain of command.

“The statement made on behalf of the Armed Forces wasn’t authorised by the military command. We urge the world to stand in solidarity with the Turkish people.”

In the past, Erdogan has expanded his power, suppressing the courts and the media. Erdogan has tried to move Turkey in a more Islamist direction, expanding religious education and pushing for more conservative policies. This has created some tension with the Turkish Military, who lean in a more secular direction the tradition of Turkey’s founding father Mustafa Kamal Attaturk.
