Hundreds of flights were grounded by a Delta Airlines computer outage, causing a massive backlog of passengers waiting to get to their destinations. The outage had a ripple effect impacting many air travellers.
At the height of the outage, over 870 flights were cancelled, while roughly 2,000 flights were delayed.

Delta CEO Ed Bastian issued a statement on the delays and flight groundings:
“I apologize for the challenges this has created for you with your travel experience. The Delta team is working very, very hard to restore and get these systems back as quickly as possible.”

Delta will provide travel vouchers to those affected by outage

The complexity of the airline industry is enormous, and keeping the system going is an immense logistical challenge. The fact that a computer glitch can result in worldwide disruption is a wake-up call to how fragile the systems that keep our society functioning can be.
