READ: The Superiority Of Western Ideas

I recently wrote about the importance of defending Western Civilization, and the values upon which our civilization is based. The West is undergoing a crisis of confidence, which can be seen in the growing number of people who denigrate the achievements of the Western World while simultaneously praising every other civilization.

Despite the fact that Western societies are the most prosperous and free the world has ever known, there are many people who benefit greatly from Western Ideas who nonetheless want to tear those ideas apart.

This is an issue of grave concern, as we could end up losing our freedom if we lose the foundation upon which it is built – Western Ideas.

With that in mind, I want to share a statement made by Ibn Warraq – the pen name of an anonymous author who has spoken critically of Islam, and is the founder of the Institute for the Secularisation of Islamic Society (the acronym turns out to be ISIS ironically). Warraq made this statement in a debate against Tariq Ramadan – a man described by some as a “cultural jihadist.” Ramadan was pushing the merits of Sharia Law, when Warraq provided this brilliant response.

Here is Ibn Warraq’s Statement On The Superiority Of Western Ideas:

“The great ideas of the West – rationalism, self-criticism, the disinterested search for truth, the separation of church and state, the rule of law and equality under the law, freedom of thought and expression, human rights, and liberal democracy – are superior to any others devised by humankind. It was the West that took steps to abolish slavery; the calls for abolition did not resonate even in Africa, where rival tribes sold black prisoners into slavery.

The West has secured freedoms for women and racial and other minorities to an extent unimaginable 60 year ago. The West recognizes and defends the rights of the individual: we are free to think what we want, to read what we want, to practice our religion, to live lives of our choosing….Nor does the West need lectures on the superior virtues of societies in which women are kept in subjection under sharia, endure genital mutilation, are stoned to death for alleged adultery, and are married off against their will at the age of nine; societies that deny the rights of supposedly lower castes; societies that execute homosexuals and apostates. The West has no use for sanctimonious homilies from societies that cannot provide clean drinking water or sewage systems, that make no provisions for the handicapped, and that leave 40 to 50 percent of their citizens illiterate.”

Warraq is 100% correct. Those of us committed to the ideas of the Western World should have the strength and courage to defend those ideas, because they are under attack as never before.

We should have pride and admiration for what Western Civilization has achieved, and we should not show false deference to civilizations that are based upon oppression and irrationality.

The West still provides the best hope on Earth of a future where freedom is secured and individual liberty is protected. That is a future worth defending, and we must not let political correctness or elitist propaganda stand in our way.
