UPDATE: Arrest Made In Barcelona As Death Toll From Terror Attack Rises

Authorities say one man has been arrested after a horrific terror attack in Barcelona left at least 13 people are dead and 50 injured.

According to the Associated Press, “The police force for Spain’s Catalonia region says it has arrested a man in the Barcelona van attack and is “treating him as a terrorist.” The police force announced the arrest on Twitter Thursday evening. It denied earlier media reports that officers had a suspect surrounded in a bar. The tweet said: “There is nobody held up in any bar in the center of Barcelona. We have arrested one man and we are treating him as a terrorist.” Meanwhile, the region’s interior minister is calling on residents to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel while the investigation continues.

The death toll has risen from the originally reported two deaths, to 13. At least 50 people are injured.

The authorities have told people to avoid the area, and metro lines have been shut down.

No organization has yet taken responsibility for the terror attack at this time.

This is the warning given by the British Foreign Office about Spain according to The Sun:

The British Foreign Office guidance for Spain reads: “Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Spain.”Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners.

“Spanish police have disrupted a number of groups suspected of recruiting individuals to travel to Syria and Iraq from 2015 to the present date.

“Some of them expressed an intention to carry out attacks in Europe.

“There’s a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria.”

The attack fits the pattern of previous Islamist terror attacks. There are reports that ISIS social media accounts are celebrating the attack.
