The Trudeau government plans to continue bringing in 300,000 or more immigrants per year, an increase of 40,000 over the numbers under the Harper government.
In a recent interview, Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen says the increased levels of immigration under the Trudeau government are the “new normal,” and could even be increased.
“Three hundred thousand is now our new normal,” said Hussen.
He added, “As a government we went from 260,000 to 300,000 because of the need to meet the demands of Canadian families who wanted to reunite with their loved ones. But also employers who are asking us to allow them to continue to use immigration more and more as a way to meet their growth needs.”
It should be noted that the immigration levels under the Harper government were already among the highest in the world on a per-capita basis.
The numbers under Trudeau, combined with higher refugee numbers – including the surge in illegal crossings – there are growing concerns about the strain on taxpayer-funded social services, as well as a reduction in the bargaining power of Canadian workers – a big reason why massive corporations want continued immigration increases.
There will also be concerns that the Trudeau government is increasing immigration to boost Canada’s population, while imposing policies that increase the cost of living, which makes it tougher for Canadian citizens to be able to start and grow our families.
Additionally, higher immigration can lead to problems with integrating people into Canada’s society – an increasing concern as the Trudeau government refuses to even believe that there is such a thing as Canadian values worth defending.
