Canadian Arms Exports To Saudi Arabia Surge Under Trudeau Government

More disgraceful hypocrisy from the “Sunny Ways” government.

In 2016, Canadian military arms exports to Saudi Arabia rose to $142 million – a 47% increase from the year before.

The increase came as Saudi Arabia prosecuted a brutal war in Yemen – which continues to this day and is precipitating one of the worst humanitarian crises in recent history.

As pointed out by Tim Naumetz, “A federal report shows the surge in exports from Canadian manufacturers — including munitions described as including “riot control agents” — took place even as the Canadian government was issuing an unusual statement of concern over growing violence in Saudi Arabia. During the period military exports to Saudi Arabia soared, separate data gathered by Industry Canada and Statistics Canada show firearm industry exports of civilian semi-automatic rifles to Saudi Arabia exploded from zero exports in 2015 to $13.5 million worth in 2016.”

Shamefully, both the Liberals and Conservatives approved major weapon sales to Saudi Arabia, despite well-known human rights concerns.

However, the Trudeau government regularly attacked the Conservatives for selling arms to the Saudis, and pledged to take a new stand in favour of human rights around the world. They even ran on a “Sunny Ways” platform, designed to show how different they were.

And yet, the sales not only continued under the Liberals, but now we know they have gone up.

It’s yet more disgraceful hypocrisy from a government that lies every time they open their mouths.
