Social programs would be stretched far past the breaking point, the economy would suffer immense damage, and the already massive public debt would get even worse.
Andrea Horwath wants Ontario to be a sancutary province.
The NDP said those exact words in a January 31, 2017 press release titled “Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath to Premir Wynne: Declare Ontario a “Sanctuary Province.”‘
Here’s what the release said about making Ontario a “sanctuary province”:
“Ontario can and must also step up and lead. In addition, I urge you to declare Ontario to be a sanctuary province. In recent years, cities like Toronto and Hamilton have shown tremendous leadership by making local services accessible to all residents, regardless of their immigration status. Now, our province must do the same. We must guarantee that services will always be accessible to everyone in Ontario.”
What this means is that anyone and everyone who crossed into Canada illegally – or was in violation of orders to leave the country, or was a criminal on the run from Border Services – would be able to get free healthcare, free education, welfare, and all the other services provided by the government – all without paying taxes or contributing.
Of course, people are glad to help citizens and those in Canada legally if they fall onto tough times and need some help. But that’s very different than opening up all services to people who are in Canada in violation of our laws.
As you can imagine, with Canada experiencing a huge surge of illegal border crossings, this would have a devastating impact on Ontario.
It would also create a gigantic incentive for people to cross into Canada illegally, making the border crisis even worse.
Andrea Horwath would basically be putting up a huge neon sign saying “free stuff” for everyone who crossed illegally.
Meanwhile, those who have contributed to the system – Ontario taxpayers – would be left out in the cold.
Healthcare waits would get even longer, schools would get more crowded, deficits and debt would surge leading to credit rating downgrades, and the entire economy would be weakened.
There would also be a surge of anger across the province as people who contributed as taxpayers would be seeing people who broke Canada’s laws jump ahead in line for services.
In short, it would be a total disaster, and it’s the kind of naive fantasy-thinking that makes the NDP so wasteful of taxpayer dollars and so harmful to the economy whenever they are in power.
Now, some may be noting that Toronto is already a “sanctuary city,” and say that Horwath’s proposal wouldn’t change much. However, even those who advocate for sanctuary city status say that Toronto is not truly a sanctuary city: “The people who are providing these services don’t realize that status is not a requirement and so they refuse to offer services although they are required to offer them,” said one advocate in a Toronto Star report.
But, a province-wide declaration of “sanctuary province” status dictated by the provincial government would be another thing entirely. Provincial governments have immense power, and Horwath’s plan would force every single municipal government to provide services to those who are in Canada illegally, and would put pressure on cities like Toronto to move past virtue-signalling and pony up the giant amounts of cash that would be necessary to achieve true “sanctuary” status.
It would be a total disaster, and it’s another reason why the NDP can’t be trusted to run Ontario. As we can see, only the PCs have offered change that’s realistic and respects taxpayers, and only they can avert the disaster that would be Horwath’s “sanctuary province” scheme.
