Opposition Wants Investigation Into Liberal Attempt To Stop Ex-Diplomats From Speaking About China

“We believe it is incumbent on the Committee to study these matters and ensure that Canada’s non-partisan, public service is not being unduly exploited for political purposes,” say Conservative & NDP MPs in letter.

A group of Conservative & NDP MPs are seeking an investigation into reports on attempts by the Trudeau Liberals to muzzle former diplomats when it comes to China policy.

In a letter to the clerk of the foreign affairs committee, the four MPs said “We believe it is incumbent on the Committee to study these matters and ensure that Canada’s non-partisan, public service is not being unduly exploited for political purposes.”

The call for investigation comes after two former Canadian diplomats, David Mulroney and Guy Saint-Jacques said they were contact by someone in the foreign affairs department who said they were calling on behalf of the PMO and sought to get them to ‘clear’ their comments with the government before speaking publicly about China – which is something that obviously shouldn’t happen in a supposedly free country.

It’s good to see the Conservatives & NDP working together on this, because opposing the authoritarian turn of the Trudeau government is something all Canadians should be able to agree on.
